Aidan Kehoe to leave the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS trust in March
The man in charge of the NHS trust behind the construction of the new Liverpool hospital hit by Carillion’s collapse is stepping down in March.
Aidan Kehoe will leave the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS trust to take up the role of chief executive at the Hamad General Hospital in Doha, Qatar.
Kehoe was left to deal with the fallout after Carillion’s collapse last January, which left the site of the new Royal Liverpool hospital at a standstill for close to 11 months.
Carillion was in the final stages of building the £335m hospital when it went bust, but cracked structural beams, non-compliant cladding and issues with the ventilation system in the anaesthetic rooms in theatres mean replacement contractor Laing O’Rourke is now not expected to complete the job toward the end of next year.
Kehoe, who joined the trust in 2012, oversaw the signing of the construction contract for the new Royal in 2013.
Following the collapse of Carillion and subsequent stalling of construction in January 2018, the trust said he was “instrumental” in negotiating a new deal with the government and previous funders to enable work on the new hospital to restart in November 2018.
The trust has said that the chairman and members of the board would meet to discuss interim arrangements for the chief executive position and that a further announcement would be made once these arrangements have been agreed.
The next public meeting of the trust’s board is scheduled to take place on 29 January.
