The award was made following a strong entry comprising informative features on innovative housing techniques.
Four other members of the Building Homes team – assistant editor Alex Smith, and columnists Malcolm Pitcher, Roger Milne and Chris Bazlinton – were also shortlisted for the same award.
Commenting on the awards, Sir Martin Laing, judge and chairman of John Laing, said "serious journalism is currently in great shape".
White was highly commended in the new business journalist of the year award run by the Periodicals Training Council.
The judges said White's entry, made up of three news stories and features for Building, showed him to be "one of the stars of business journalism". The judges were impressed with White's "impressive stream of news exclusives … as well as hard-hitting features, which have provided a talking point for the industry".
