Play Pathfinder aims to provide children free access to natural and innovative play opportunities

Consultant Capita Symonds has completed work on the first stage of the Play Pathfinder, an new playground scheme which is being developed by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council with funding from the Department of Children’s, Schools and Families.

The £2.5m project – which will act as a template for similar schemes across the UK – aims to provide all children and young people with free access to play opportunities which are inclusive, natural and innovative.

Capita's work has involved the design, development and construction of 13 new playgrounds across the borough.

The playgrounds are based upon natural play, and encourage challenging play opportunities whilst promoting the sites natural surroundings.

Consultation has already begun on phase two, which will see the development of 16 more sites.

The scheme is due for completion in March 2010.
