Construction’s workforce grew to 2.2 million at the end of 2013, after three consecutive quarters of employment growth.

Construction firms took on an additional 18,000 staff in the final quarter of the year, compared to the previous three months.

The employment figure at the end of December 2013 was up 103,000 on March.

The news came as employment across the whole UK economy reached a record high of 30.2 million for the three months to January this year, after the workforce increased by 105,000 over the period.
