Austrian architect designs a high school in Los Angeles

Austrian architect Coop Himmelb(l)au has completed the $172m (£115m) High School #9 in Los Angeles.

The visual and performing arts school in downtown LA has a 1,000-seat theatre and seven school buildings for its 1,800 pupils. Among the design flourishes are a pyramid of glass and steel at the school’s entrance and a looping walkway spirals down from an elevated classroom at the summit of a small tower. The main contractor was PCL Construction and the structural engineer was Taylor and Gaines.
