Costain has become the latest quoted contractor to return to the FTSE 250.

The firm will take its place among the biggest 250 quoted companies on Monday after an absence of more than 20 years. The firm first floated in the 1930s.

The firm said: “The re-entry comes after years of consistent strong financial performance, building positions in growing markets and delivering increasing shareholder returns.”

Chief executive Alex Vaughan added: “This significant milestone follows what has been a sustained period of strong financial performance for the business, with increased profitability, positive cash generation and continued momentum in securing high-quality work across our chosen growth markets.”

Other firms to re-enter the FTSE 250 recently have been Kier and Galliford Try.

Costain will release its 2025 results on 10 March.
