Costain has been appointed to carry out a £125m highways job in the north-east of England.

The contractor has been chosen to build major improvements on the A19 for Highways England.

The improvements include changes at Testo’s roundabout that will improve severe congestion and reduce drivers’ journey times.

Development consent for the project in south Tyneside was granted by transport secretary Chris Grayling last September.

In its 2018 results announced earlier this month, the firm said pre-tax profit slipped from £41.8m to £40.2m last year. Turnover during the period was down 13% to £1.5bn.
