Repairs will focus on leaking roofs and eroded masonry in 23 churches

Dilapidated churches in Yorkshire are to receive over £2m to repair their crumbling structures.

Seven churches in West Yorkshire will collectively receive over £800,000 from English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The money is being awarded under the Repair Grants for Places Worship scheme.

Meanwhile, across Yorkshire and the Humber, 16 churches will receive a share of about £2m.

The repairs will focus on leaking roofs and eroded masonry.

Trevor Mitchell, from English Heritage, said: "These grants aim to support urgent repairs, nipping problems in the bud like leaking roofs which, if left unchecked, would allow damages to spread, decaying wonderful interiors and requiring far more costly remedies in the future."
