The government is set to test its controversial home information packs with a “dry run” in 2006.
The ODPM announced on Tuesday that it intended the packs, which house sellers will be required to send to buyers, to be introduced in early 2007.
The dry-run exercise will track a sample of transactions from the point of enquiry to completion.
The packs provide homebuyers with a home condition report and an energy efficiency survey.
Housing minister Yvette Cooper said a certification scheme was being developed that would oversee standards for these reports and the accreditation of the home inspectors who would prepare them.
The government is also working on a way to fast-track experienced surveyors who want to be home inspectors. There has been concern that it would be difficult to train the 7000 inspectors needed by 2007.
Controversy also centres on the cost of the packs. The government hopes competition between pack providers will keep costs to £600-700. Critics have suggested they could cost house vendors £1000.
