Deputy mayor says local government will start safety inspections on all construction site

Eight construction workers died yesterday when a wall collapsed in the north-west of China.

The men, who were all migrant workers from the Henan province, died when part of a cement wall built to cordon off a construction site fell on them yesterday afternoon, according to the Chinese press. Residents in two neighbouring buildings were evacuated.

The men were working on a Qinghai Jiahao Real Estate development on a shopping street in Xining, a city on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. Zhang Xiaorong, the deputy mayor of Xining, said early investigations showed the contractor, Zhejiang Hainan Construction Project Co., had started work without a license. The local government will start safety inspections on all projects under construction today, he said.
