£217m project will link UK and France with 500MW cable

Eurotunnel has unveiled plans to hook up the UK power grid to France with a 500MW cable through the Channel Tunnel.

The £217m electricity link will connect Sellindge in Kent with the Les Mandarins substation near Coquelles, France, in a move to bolster UK power supplies.

The system is designed to shore up UK energy security as the government moves towards a greater reliance on temperamental wind generation.

The two-year project is a joint venture between Eurotunnel, which owns 49%, and infrastructure fund Star Capital, which owns 51%.
