Contractor J Murphy & Sons has appointed former Aecom and Balfour Beatty director Stuart Rothery as its new water director.

Rothery joined this month in the newly-created role as Murphy seeks to expand in the water infrastructure market.

A chartered engineer with 32 years experience, Rothery has also worked for Morgan Sindall, Parsons Brinckerhoff and Amec during his career, as well as major clients in the water sector including United Utilities, South-West Water, Yorkshire Water and Thames Water.

Commenting on the appointment, Murphy chief executive Steve Hollingshead said: “With the skills of our highly developed teams, combined with Stuart’s expertise, we will be working on projects that are strategic to our growth and harness the capabilities at Murphy in both niche and specialist water services”.

Rothery said he was “delighted” to take on his new role having “long admired” Murphy.
