Newcastle-based architect FaulknerBrowns is tipped to win the commission to design the £95m Picketts Lock athletics stadium in north-east London.
The 50 000-seat stadium is intended to host the World Athletics Championships in 2005. FaulknerBrowns is one of Britain's top sports building designers, but has no track record of stadium design.

The practice is up against Arup Associates, Miller Partnership, Burland TM, Building Design Partnership and Ward McHugh Associates. Project developer Lee Valley Park Authority is expected to announce the winner shortly. UK Athletics has raised £72m in funding, but is said to be confident of making up the £23m shortfall.
