A £11m Countryside Properties luxury redevelopment has been destroyed by fire.

A blaze swept through the development at Hatchford Park, in Ockham, Surrey, on Wednesday night, causing 95% damage to the site. only the tall chimneys and some walls were left standing following the blaze.

The grade II-listed building was being converted to 13 apartments by a joint venture between Countryside Residential and Surrey firm Latchmere Properties. The firms had been working on the development for the past four years. All but two of the apartments had been sold.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. A Countryside spokeswoman said it was too soon to say what would happen to the building.

She said: “At present, the building has not even been made safe. We are waiting for reports from the fire service’s forensic team and our own engineers. We cannot make any comment on the building’s future until those reports have come back.”

The spokeswoman added that the buyers of the apartments were being consulted about the situation on an individual basis. The grounds of the house contain further residential buildings that are already occupied, but these were not damaged in the blaze.
