Sir John Egan will review the future of construction's new strategic forum next year.
Egan said a year was reasonable time to assess the success of the forum, which meets for the first time next week. He said: "If I feel I am wasting my time, I will not continue."

The first meeting will decide who will sit on the forum and the issues to be discussed. However, Building understands that the two main issues on the agenda will be health and safety and the future of the Rethinking Construction initiative.

The forum is expected to include representatives from client bodies, unions and the Housing Forum, as well as members of the defunct Construction Industry Board.

The Health and Safety Executive's chief construction inspector Kevin Myers will attend meetings to review progress made on targets set in February's safety summit. Findings will be reported at a conference in October, to be called Working Well Together.

Umbrella bodies within construction must start delivering what they promised in February

Myers said all umbrella bodies within construction must start delivering what they promised in February.

"Within the strategic forum, we will be looking for people to tell us what exactly they are doing to bring change in the safety of the industry – and not telling us what other people should be doing," he said.
