Airport operator BAA appoints Foster and Partners to undertake early design work on proposed redevelopment.

Airport operator BAA has appointed Foster and Partners as architect for the £1.5bn Heathrow East proposal, as predicted by Building in November.

Arup will undertake structural engineering and Hoare Lea & Partners will carry out building service engineering work.

Contractors Laing O'Rourke and Mace will advise BAA on the early stages of construction for the redevelopment project. Doig and Smith has been selected to provide early stage commercial advice.

Mike Forster, BAA business strategy director for Heathrow, said: "It is important to stress that at this stage these companies have been appointed for early design and development work only. They are working with us to assess the viability of the project in the run up to a possible planning application at the beginning of next year."

BAA added that it had made these appointments swiftly in order to commence early design and development work at the end of January.
