Foster & Partners has submitted plans for a new Maggie’s centre in Manchester.

Foster & Partners has submitted plans for a new Maggie’s cancer support centre in Manchester.

The £6m scheme is in the grounds of cancer treatment centre The Christie.

Norman Foster said scheme focuses on maximising natural light and has “a particular personal significance, as I was born in the city and have first-hand experience of the distress of a cancer diagnosis”.

“I believe in the power of architecture to lift the spirits and help in the process of therapy,” he added.

The surrounding gardens have been designed by celebrity gardener Dan Pearson.

“Within the centre, there is a variety of spaces - visitors can gather around a big kitchen table, find a peaceful place to think or they can work with their hands in the greenhouse,” Foster added.

Other architects to have designed a Maggie’s Centre include Richard Rogers, Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas.

The project is scheduled to open in 2016.
