Health and safety procedures must be adhered to, say unions after site deaths

Unions have called on contractors to take stock of safety procedures after four builders were crushed to death in one of the worst site accidents in a decade.

The four builders were constructing foundations for an engineering yard extension when the steelworks they were working on collapsed on top of them.

Peter Johnson, 42, brothers Thomas Hazelton, 26 and Dan Hazelton, 30, and Adam Taylor, 28, were pronounced dead at the scene after the incident at Claxton Engineering in Norfolk last Friday.

The builders worked for local firm Hazegood Construction, which Dan Hazelton helped found.

John Mclean, health and safety officer at GMB, said: “I can’t remember the last time there was an incident on this level.”
