Four construction managers are in the running for a £40m mixed-use scheme for Berkeley Homes in west London
The contenders are Bovis Lend Lease, Schal, Exterior and Mace, and the prize is the conversion of a former social security office in Bromyard Avepnue, Acton.

The five-storey building is to be turned into 493 one-, two- and three-bedroom flats, one-third of which will be social housing. Twenty-seven new-build flats are to be added to the development, along with 5000 m2 of offices and a car park.

A source on the team said construction was due to start in the summer. Other team members are architect Design Group 3, project manager EC Harris, services engineer Blyth & Blyth, structural engineer Cameron Taylor Bedford and QS Davis Langdon & Everest.

The development adds momentum to the revival of the construction management market, which has been hit by a drought in new London office developments.

British Land has shortlisted two construction managers for its £100m headquarters for Willis Associates, a Foster and Partners-designed scheme in the City of London.

It is also to use the procurement method for a £20m refurbishment of the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield. The team for this project will include architect Benoy, structural engineer Connell Mott MacDonald, services engineer FHP Partnership and QS Todd & Ledson to work on the plans. The scheme is due to go on site at the end of the year.

  • Exterior has emerged as favourite to pick up a £40m contract to build the Hopkins Architects' National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, south-west London. It is believed that Laing O'Rourke was also in contention for the project, which is due to go on site early next year. The client is the Lawn Tennis Association.
