Galliford Try’s purchase of Miller Group’s £400m construction business makes it a top 10 UK contractor for the first time, according to Building’s analysis of the Top 150 contractors and housebuilders in this week’s issue.

The purchase pushes Galliford Try up to eighth in the table of businesses ranked by contracting turnover.

Combining Miller Construction’s revenues with Galliford Try’s takes the group to a total turnover of almost £2bn, up by a quarter on 2012.

Balfour Beatty and Laing O’Rourke kept their places as the UK’s largest two contractors.

Overall the tables showed cumulative growth in turnover of 2.5% for the 150 biggest housebuilders and contractors operating in the UK. However, the research demonstrated the strength of the recovery of housebuilders, with turnover among the top 20 housebuilders rising by 14%.

The ongoing housing recovery saw a third housebuilder, Persimmon, make it into the top 10 of housebuilders and contractors, with revenues of £2.09bn, up 21.5% on 2012.
