City landmark to become mixed-use scheme

Gleeds has been chosen to project and cost manage the redevelopment of a grade II-listed department store in Cardiff.

The Howells building on St Mary Street is set to become a leisure and entertainment precinct and commercial hub.

The 1.7-acre site is being developed by Naissance Capital Real Estate, who acquired it in 2016, while London-based Rio Architects is the practice behind the plans.

Current tenant House of Fraser, which was bought for £90m by retail tycoon Mike ashley last August, will continue to feature in the complex.

It will also include leisure, restaurant, and entertainment spaces as well as offices and further residential.

The Howells building was established as a department store by James Howell in 1849. It was acquired by House of Fraser in 1972.
