Partner at Ernst & Young pledges to improve efficiency as head of new Property Unit

John McCready, a senior partner at Ernst & Young, has been appointed to manage the government’s £370bn property portfolio.

McCready will head the government’s new Property Unit within the Shareholder Executive set up by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

The new unit will cover the public sector estate, including the central government’s office and operational estate, such as the NHS and Ministry of Defence buildings, as well as the local government estate, excluding council housing.

McCready, who will become a member of the shareholder executive board, said: “The government said this week it wanted to be smarter with its assets, creating efficiencies and cutting waste and duplication. Nowhere is this aspiration more relevant than in the strategic management of its estates. I will use my experience in property and in business to help the government make the best and most efficient use of its property assets.”
