Planners have given the first phase of South Shields’ £100m city centre regeneration scheme the green light.

The development, put together by South Tyneside council and Muse Developments, includes a new library, a digital media hub and a 40-space car park in its first phase.

Later phases of the scheme will include shopping and leisure facilities and a new travel interchange.

David Wells, development director at Muse Developments, said he was now seeking a contractor to undertake the work and hoped to start in early 2015.

He added: “The development of the new central library and digital media centre will create a superb and unique facility for the town whilst the redevelopment of the Market Place will breath new life into an important South Shields tradition.”
