Hammerson receives outline planning approval for £500m city centre scheme

Developer Hammerson has received outline planning approval for a £500m regeneration project for Sheffield city centre.

Hammerson will now appoint a series of architects for the different elements of the scheme, to be built for Sheffield City Council.

The New Retail Quarter scheme will include retail accommodation, residential apartments, a health club and leisure facilities. Architect O’Donnell + Tuomey has already been appointed to design a flagship John Lewis store within the development.

Carolyn Kenney, assistant director at Hammerson, said: “This scheme will totally revitalise Sheffield’s retail offering, attracting major retailers to the heart of the city.”

The scheme is due for completion in 2012.
