AN environmental group has attacked housebuilders for ignoring green issues.

Business in the Environment, whose members include Slough Estates and Laing, said none of the top 10 housebuilders (ranked by capitalisation) had submitted data for its index of environmental good behaviour.

The index, in its fourth year, assesses the impact that companies have on the environment. BiE director Belinda Howell said she was surprised and disappointed by the lack of response.

She said: “The failure of specialist housebuilders to participate is particularly difficult to understand. One, the Berkeley Group, will take part next year, but almost all the remainder failed even to acknowledge our approach.”

The BiE added that only seven of the 21 construction and materials firms invited took part in the scheme. Blue Circle Industries came out top of those that signed up. Laing’s director of environmental affairs, Christopher Laing, said his firm, which came fifth in the index, supported the BiE campaign.
