Hackney council approves amended proposals for 1.5m sq ft project on central London site

Foster + Partners' revised designs for Bishops Place scheme have won planning approval from the London Borough of Hackney.

The amended scheme includes 233 Shoreditch High Street (the Light Bar building) and will open up a 1.3ha central London site previously largely inaccessible to the public.

The 1.5m sq ft project, designed by Foster + Partners, includes offices, apartments, retail and a hotel. The housing element will include 50 affordable units.

As well as including 233 Shoreditch High Street, the revisions to the scheme increase the amount of public open space in the scheme's footprint to 48%.

Martin Jepson, managing director of Hammerson London Group, said: “Bishops Place is an important catalyst for further investment within Hackney and the unanimous support of members demonstrates their commitment to regeneration in the area.

“The scheme is a vital part of Hammerson's ongoing commitment to Shoreditch and we are looking forward to working with the council in helping to deliver its long-term vision for the borough.”
