Hammerson unveils £70m Southampton scheme

Developer Hammerson has submitted a planning application for 89,000 m² a leisure-led development in Southampton alongside the city’s WestQuay shopping centre.

The £70m development, called Watermark WestQuay, has been designed by architect Acme. The first phase of the development includes a cinema, 15 restaurants, retail space and new public space along the historic walls of the city.

The second phase would include a residential tower, hotel, offices and more restaurants.

Guy Wells, development manager for Hammerson, said he hoped to gain planning permission for the development this year.

He added: “Watermark WestQuay will significantly improve the town’s leisure offer and night time economy.”

The development sits alongside the city’s 76,200m² WestQuay shopping centre, which is jointly owned by Hammerson and GIC Real Estate, the real estate investment arm of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation.
