The government is at “significant risk” of missing its housebuilding targets because of a shortage of skilled planners, a committee of MPs was due to announce yesterday.

The report, by the Communities and Local Government committee, was expected to find there was a “drastic shortage of planning officers”, which would affect 46% of local authority posts by 2012. It says the system is “unable to manage the volume or variety of tasks required by 2020”.
