The smog warning in Beijing reaches its highest level

China this week declared its first ‘red alert’ smog warning in Beijing, the highest level of air quality warning, after lung-damaging particles were measured at 10 times safe levels. Measures to protect citizens from the smog included closing schools and banning outdoor construction, causing sites across the city to pause for the three-day hiatus.
