The SSI steelworks in Redcar. The coke ovens and blast furnace at the plant closed down last week, ending hopes of saving jobs, as news of further losses in the steel sector came, with Tata announcing nearly 1,200 job losses at
its plants in Scunthorpe and Lanarkshire and parts of Caparo Industries’ steel operations going into administration.

Many in the UK steel industry have blamed the crisis on cheap imports from China.
