Architect Powell Dobson wins design contract for local and national government offices in Aberystwyth

Welsh architect Powell Dobson has won the competition to design multi-million pound offices for the Countryside Commission for Wales and the Forestry Commission.

Two sustainable office buildings will be built in Aberystwyth - one for the Welsh Assembly Government countryside and forestry departments and one for Ceredigion County Council.

The 7600sq m Welsh Assembly Government office will be able to accommodate 535 staff.

Up to 450 Ceredigion County Council officials will be housed in a second 7200sq m building.

Although the council and government bodies are separate, the buildings will share a landscaped garden and unified design. Both buildings are aiming for an excellent BREEAM rating and will feature a biomass boiler, rainwater harvesting and solar water heating.

The mechanical and electrical contractors are Hoare Lea, the structural engineers Clarkebond and landscape architects are Soltys Brewster.

Work is expected to start in Spring 2007 and will take approximately 18 months to complete.
