Architect Sheppard Robson completes Bessemer building refurbishment

The new Imperial College institute of biomedical engineering building has officially opened.

Designed by architect Sheppard Robson, the refurbished 1960s Bessemer building now houses the nanotechnology centre and bio-incubator suite.

Replacing the original front elevation of the building with full-height glazing has transformed the research environment into an open, predominantly naturally-lit space.

Bold colours are incorporated into the internal design, accentuating the column structure of the building and visually linking the spaces within by repeating the colour in communal areas, in the "glass box" of the roof top café and the surround on the front entrance.
