BDP-designed £237m Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool opens today

The UK’s first ‘children’s health park’ - the Laing O’Rourke-built and BDP-designed Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool - has opened to the public.

Young patients will take their first steps into the children’s hospital today, a day before the existing Alder Hey hospital begins a five day move into its new home.

The £237m facility’s design was inspired by the children and young people who use the hospital, and features large, colourful wards with outdoor playing areas, as well as quirky animal sculptures and a spacious public realm.

It will treat around 275,000 patients annually and has 270 beds, together with 16 digitally enhanced operating theatres. WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff providing engineering services.
