The stadium will form the centrepiece of a mixed-use development in the heart of Bogotá.
BDP Pattern has unveiled proposals to redevelop the historic El Campin stadium in Bogota as part of a wider plan to create a new “civic heart” in the Colombian capital.
Working with Sencia Colombia and engineering firm WSP, BDP Pattern, the sports and leisure division of BDP, will place the historic stadium in the middle of a new mixed-use destination for sport, music, culture, and leisure in Bogotá.
BDP Pattern is acting as the lead design consultant on the project.
The redeveloped stadium will have a capacity of 50,000, up from the current 39,000, and will feature a retractable roof, enabling it to be used year-round for programming, sports, and concerts.
It will be built alongside the existing El Campín stadium, meaning football matches can continue without interruption through the development phase. El Campín is home to Millonarios FC and Club Independiente Santa Fe.
The project, which is currently at the design phase, will also try to incorporate energy-efficient systems, local materials and green spaces that reflect the city’s landscape.
The masterplan has been designed to allow the stadium to operate independently and simultaneously with the wider district.
