Bilbao one of few cities in Europe which experienced a 100% eclipse yesterday evening
The Guggenheim Bilbao has released images of what the Frank Gehry-designed museum looked like during yesterday’s solar eclipse.
Bilbao was one of a string of cities along Spain’s north-western coast that lay in the path of totality, when the sun is 100% obscured by the passage of the moon in front of it.
The photographs show crowds of people standing on the walkway behind the building to watch the once-in-a-generation event, which will not be seen again in Bilbao until 2048.
The sun’s light can be seen dimming over the sculptural forms of the museum before disappearing, plunging the watching crowds into darkness.
Yesterday’s eclipse in the UK was outside the path of totality, with about 90% of the sun’s light blocked by the moon. The total eclipse was also seen on the western end of Iceland, the country’s first full eclipse since 1954.
