Infrastructure and private commercial work is driving growth in the construction market, according to output figures from the DETR.

The volume of new work in the third quarter of 1999 was 2% higher than the previous quarter and 4% up on the same period a year ago.

More than £7.7bn of new build output was recorded in the third quarter of 1999. Total output, including repair and maintenance, was £14.3bn in the third quarter.

New infrastructure output in the third quarter was 4% up on the previous quarter and 6% higher than the same period last year.

The DETR said repair and maintenance work was 1% down on the previous quarter but unchanged from the same time last year. It added that private housing was 2% higher than the previous quarter and 1% lower than the same period last year.

Public sector housing is booming. It is 10% up on the previous quarter, but this is still down 8% on the same time last year.

Industrial work is suffering. Private industrial output is 3% down on the second quarter of 1999 and 2% lower than the same time last year.
