15 year energy payback for 10% extra build costs for Daventry shed

A Daventry factory has saved nearly £3,000 in energy through installing insulated roof panels and roof lights during its construction.

The 15 000 sq m production facility for Hambleside Danelaw, which also made the insulation materials, has shaved £2,800 on its bills over the past 18 months compared with its old, leaky property which was built to 1960s standards.

The roof of the factory was fitted with Hambleside Danelaw’s Insulator GRP Rooflight system, the roof and wall clad with Corus Colorcoat HPS200 and Colorcoat Prisma pre-finished steel.

Approximate figures from the firm suggest that the extra insulation cost around £200,000 or 10% of the build cost, suggesting a payback time of 10-15 years. The life expectancy of the property is 40 years.

The property was developed by Daventry District Council and was opened in September 2007.

The insulator roof lights cover 20% of the roof area and provide a U value of 0.8 W/m2K.
