Engineer expands global presence after deal with Norwegian firm

US engineering giant Jacobs has bought $675m (£439m) worth of mining and metals business from Norwegian construction and engineering firm Aker Solutions ASA.

The deal, which sees several of Aker’s operations in its process and construction division transfer to Jacobs, is expected to close in the second quarter of 2011.

Jacobs said that the deal would boost its mining and metals sector and add to its worldwide coverage.

It said: “Aker Solutions’ P&C operations significantly expand Jacobs’ global presence in the mining and metals market; provide a new geographic region with South America; and strengthen Jacobs’ presence in China. Jacobs’ regional presence in Australia, Europe and North America is also enhanced as a result of the transaction.”

Jacobs president and CEO Craig Martin said, “This acquisition allows us to further diversify our services and drive greater growth in our business.
