Mel Stride also replaced as shadow chancellor by former Just Eat chairman Andrew Griffiths
Conservative MP Katie Lam has been appointed shadow housing secretary following a major reshuffle of party leader Kemi Badenoch’s front bench.
Lam was elected as MP for Weald of Kent in the 2024 general election and is considered a rising star in the Conservative party, known for her restrictionst views on immigration.
She replaces James Cleverly, who had held the shadow housing brief since July 2025 but resigned over the weekend to run for the 2028 London mayoral election.
The Conservative party said Lam will “lead our work to get Britain building while standing up for local communities, and ensuring local government works effectively for people across the country”.
Writing on X following her appointment, Lam criticised Labour’s record on housing, arguing that “people who work hard and do the right thing are finding it harder than ever to get on the housing ladder”.
“Meanwhile, those who break the rules are getting away with it. Far too many local councillors are wasting taxpayer money. Far too many candidates are running campaigns designed to appeal to particular ethnic, religious, or racial groups. Those who ignore our laws, including Gypsies and Travellers, are being allowed to get away with it,” she added.
Badenoch has also appointed Andrew Griffiths as shadow chancellor, replacing Mel Stride.
Griffiths was a former chief financial officer and chief operating officer at Sky, and a former chairman of Just Eat before joining Parliament in 2019.
Meanwhile, former shadow energy secretary Claire Coutinho has replaced Griffiths as shadow business secretary and will act as the latter’s deputy.
