Kier has been named preferred supplier for a £50m design services contract for Highways England for its Area 7 region, which covers the East Midlands.

The five year contract starts at the beginning of July and will see Kier’s highways division prepare technical designs and carry out support work for capital projects.

Area 7 comprises 79km of motorway and 428km of trunk roads in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland, including stretches of the M1, M6 and A1.

Kier’s chief executive, Haydn Mursell, said the award reflected the strength of the firm’s offering after its acquisition of consultant Mouchel last year.

Earlier this month, the firm said interim pre-tax profits fell a third to £18m for the second half of 2015 after racking up £26m of one-off costs which included £15.5m of integration costs following the takeover of Mouchel.
