Laing O'Rourke secures £38m contract after fending off Sir Robert McAlpine, Carillion and Miller

Contractor Laing O’Rourke has won a £38m deal to build football club Cardiff City’s new stadium.

Laing O’Rourke beat Sir Robert McAlpine, Carillion and Miller to secure the contract for the stadium. The 60-acre scheme, to be built on the site of the Leckwith Athletic stadium, also includes a 438,700 sq ft retail development and an athletics venue.

Cardiff’s chairman Peter Ridsdale said today that he expects the project to be ready by December 2008. He said that he expects plans to be approved by the council in November, with demolition of the old Leckwith Athletic Stadium due to commence early next year.
