Sir John Parker has today taken up the reins as Laing O’Rourke’s chairman. He takes over from founder Ray O’Rourke, who will continue as chief executive.

The contractor said that initially, Parker (pictured) will concentrate on building early relationships with key clients and driving innovation through the firm.

The announcement of his appointment was initially made in April.

Parker, who has over 50 years of experience in engineering and leadership roles, joins following an eight year stint as chairman of mining conglomerate Anglo American.

He has also held senior roles at British Gas and the National Grid.
