Tonkiss joined the retirement homebuilder in 2014, and was formerly its national operations director

McCarthy & Stone has announced two major promotions in a bid to boost growth.

The retirement homebuilder has promoted John Tonkiss (pictured) to the newly-created role of chief operating officer. Tonkiss, who joined McCarthy & Stone in 2014, was formerly the group’s national operations director.

In his new role Tonkiss will be charged with meeting the firm’s target of building and selling 3,000 retirement properties by 2019, as well as overseeing the continued development of the group’s nine regional operations across the UK.

“We are delighted to announce John’s appointment to the role,” said McCarthy & Stone chief executive, Clive Fenton.

“He has made an excellent contribution to the group since joining us in 2014 and becoming a main board director in 2015, driving our three strategic initiatives to shorten our working capital cycle and these are having a significant and positive impact on our overall efficiency programme.”

In another move, McCarthy & Stone promoted Darren Humphreys to central divisional managing director, with a brief to look after the company’s activities in the West Midlands, East Midlands and South West.

Fenton added: “These new roles will help us focus and manage our business, and ensure we run efficient operations at scale.

“It reflects the investment and infrastructure we are putting in place to grow the business quickly and support doubling of our sales releases over the next 12 months.”
