Contractors team up to widen 16-mile stretch of M1 under Highways Agency contract.

Mowlem and Costain will team up to widen a 16-mile stretch of the M1 after the Highways Agency awarded the firms a £429m Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract.

The joint venture will see the pair widen the M1 from three to four lanes over 16 miles between junction 10 near Luton and junction 13 south of Milton Keynes.

Mowlem and Costain will also replace 19 bridges over the motorway, upgrade 36 crossings under it, and improve junctions 11, 12 and 13.

Simon Vivian, Mowlem chief executive, said: “Mowlem is delighted to be extending its long-standing and successful partnership with the Highways Agency on this very important and high profile project.”

Under the same deal the pair have also won a contract to design and build a new link between the A5 and the M1.
