Contractor Mowlem has beaten off bids from Costain and Jarvis to be chosen as preferred bidder on a £47m PFI hospital scheme in south-east London
Client Lewisham Hospital NHS Trust intends to build an extension to University Hospital. The Mowlem team includes architect RTKL and cost consultant Gleeds.

The project is one of a number of PFI hospitals that the government announced in February 2002, which are worth a total of £1bn.

The Lewisham hospital is one of five pilot PFI hospitals to be overseen by the Prince of Wales, acting as design champion in a joint initiative between The Prince's Foundation and NHS Estates, launched in November 2001.

The other pilots chosen are: Hope Hospital in Salford, Greater Manchester; Central Middlesex Hospital, west London; Pinderfields in Wakefield, West Yorkshire; and mental health facilities in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear.
