No new transport schemes will begin construction until 2012-3

There will be no new road schemes staring in the UK in the next two years.

The Deparment of Transport today released details of a further 16 road schemes that have been approved, but none wills start before 2012-13. These schemes are in addition to those the chancellor gave the green light to on Wednesday last week.

A statement from the department said: “The level of funding required for schemes already under construction is such that it is unlikely that any new schemes will be able to begin construction before 2012/13.”

Fifty-six other local authority road, bus and rail works were left in limbo, and will have to fight to get funding from a £600m pot of money.

Construction on another 14 Highways Agency schemes, including the M25 junction 30, will be delayed until after 2015.
