Construction companies have been targeted by a fresh wave of threatening letters from animal rights extremists attempting to stop construction of animal testing laboratories at Oxford University.

Thames Valley Police are investigating 18 cases of anonymous letters sent to building and decorating firms across Oxfordshire, threatening action by extremist group the Animal Liberation Front. Contractor Montpellier pulled out of the controversial Oxford project last year after being targeted by rights extremists.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said that it was likely more companies had received threats, and urged them to come forward. He said: “Thames Valley Police has worked with representatives from groups who wish to protest about the building and the University to facilitate a regular time and place for active protest. Criminal activity will not be tolerated from any section of the community.”
