Centre for Alternative Technology offers guided tours around new training facility with UK’s highest rammed earth walls

Member of the public are being encouraged to view the latest green building methods at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) in Wales.

A platform has been built for visitors to watch construction of the new £6.2m educational facility, built using rammed earth, timber and lime.

The building is for the Wales Institute for Sustainable Education (WISE). It’s a three-storey timber-frame building and includes: 24 double bedrooms for students, classrooms, workshops, a roof garden, a lecture theatre and a bar.

The construction team has completed one half of the earth walls for the circular 200-seat lecture theatre. At 7.2m it will have the highest rammed earth walls in the UK.

CAT said it would use the centre to run courses, including DIY courses for energy enthusiasts, training for professional installers and masters courses in renewable energy.
