Scheme for L&Q inspired by site’s heritage of photography and manufacturing
Architect Jestico + Whiles has submitted detailed plans to build 772 homes on the former Kodak factory site in north Harrow.
Designed for developer L&Q, the scheme is the latest phase of the 23ha site’s transformation into a 2,000-home mixed-use district.
The first phase, consisting of 246 affordable homes designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards and BPTW, was completed in 2022.
Jestico + Whiles’ second phase proposes ten buildings across four main residential blocks ranging in height from six to 16 storeys, a 1,350sq m health centre and a “Green Link” cycle route centred on the site’s retained Kodak chimney.
The factory was established in 1891 and was Kodak’s first outside the United States, with its later buildings considered typical of early 20th century industrial architecture.
The design of the new buildings has been inspired by the site’s manufacturing heritage, featuring London stock brickwork and “robust” detailing with modern flourishes including chamfered corner entrances and sculptural seating.
It also includes nods to the site’s legacy of photography, with a colour palette drawn from photographic processes and a landscape design, by Turkington Martin, featuring sculptures referencing camera shutters and apertures.
