Scheme includes refurbishment of Victorian workhouse which has stood empty since 2007
HTA has submitted fresh plans to replace an office block in east London with a six-storey housing scheme after reworking a previous consent.
The practice has taken over from ArchitecturePLB on the Southern Grove site near Mile End station, which is being designed for Tower Hamlets council.
The original planning application was submitted and approved in 2020 and would have delivered 78 homes, with HTA’s revised plans for the site proposing an increase to 90 homes.
Private homes would be located in Southern Grove Lodge, a four-storey Victorian former workhouse within the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Conservation area which has been vacant since 2007 and would be refurbished.
Social homes are earmarked for a T-shaped newbuild block which would replace a council office building dating to the late 20th century, which HTA described in planning documents as “architecturally non-descript”.
The scheme includes a central garden area between the two buildings and a new public park area at the front of Southern Grove Lodge.
The project team includes Mace as project manager and cost consultant, Sphere25 on planning, Buro Happold on environmental, Arup on sustainability and Lathams on heritage.
